Drain the garbanzo beans well, reserving the liquid (aquafaba).
Peel the garbanzo beans by placing each one between thumb and forefinger and squeezing gently.
To the bowl of a food processor, add the aquafaba, peanut butter, cocoa powder, salt, and maple syrup. Blend until smooth, scraping down the sides.
Add the peeled garbanzo beans and 2 tablespoons of water. Process until smooth, stopping 1-2 times to scrape down the sides of the processor bowl. Add additional water if needed for the desired consistency.
Transfer the hummus to a bowl, top with optional garnishes, and serve.
