    Caramelized Onion Dip

click here to get straight to the recipe

As another entry to my list of onion-hating hypocrisies, I bring you the most creamy, dreamy, savory Caramelized Onion Dip recipe! It's like that dip you remember from all of the good parties when you were a kid with the ridged potato chips, but better. It takes some time to caramelize the onions, but this dip will make you the star of the party.

    Ingredients and Preparation

You don't need a lot of ingredients to build big flavor here, but you need heavy hitters: soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, and onions. Then you bring in the creamy texture with a combination of mayonnaise and sour cream. Aside form basics like olive oil, salt, and pepper that's it!

An arrangement of ingredients for the Caramelized Onion Dip in small bowls on a white surface.

We start with 6 ounces of yellow onioins, sliced in to half moons about ¼-inch wide. You'll cook them with a bit of olive oil and salt and pepper until they are deeply caramelized. For an illustration of how this looks at various stages, see my French Onion Soup recipe. For this quantity of onions it wil take about 20-25 minutes. Feel free to add water, a tablespoon at a time, to keep the onions from burning and to deglaze the pan as needed.

Once the onions are a gorgeous shade of brown, add in the soy sauce and balsamic vinegar. Cook for another 30 seconds or so to fully deglaze the pan, then scrape all of that goodness into a medium bowl to cool. Stir in the mayonnaise and sour cream and then let the dip chill to intensify the flavor. Keep it covered in the refrigerator until you are ready to eat!

    Uses for Caramelized Onion Dip

The short story is use this stuff everywhere. It is obviously good as a dip for chips and vegetables, so try it that way first. If you want to make a next-level burger, spread some of this Caramelized Onion Dip on the buns and you'll be the grill hero. Combine this dip with some bacon and a grilled chicken breast and you'll have a dynamite chicken sandwich. It probably won't last long, but be sure to store it safely in the refrigerator and use it within a few days.
